Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak to Host Al Muwatta Hadith and Isnad Gathering in Kuching

Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak is set to host the Al-Muwaṭṭa’ Hadith and Isnād Gathering, a five-day Islamic scholarly programme from 1 to 5 September 2026.The programme was announced by the Political Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister, Tuan Haji Irwan Zulkarnain bin Hasbi, during a press conference held at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak yesterday.

The large-scale Islamic scholarly programme is organised by the P.194 Petra Jaya Member of Parliament’s Service Centre, in collaboration with Majlis Bukhari Malaysia, Majlis Islam Sarawak, Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Sarawak Institute of Islamic Understanding and Da’wah (IKMAS), Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Masjid Negeri Sarawak (LAKMNS) and Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM).

The gathering will focus on the study and reading of the renowned hadith compilation, al-Muwaṭṭa’ by Imam Malik bin Anas al-Asbahi, based on the narration of Imam Yahya bin Yahya al-Laithi.The sessions will be led directly by the distinguished scholar and hadith authority, As-Sheikh Al-Musnid Muhammad Abul Huda Al-Yaqoubi.

During the first four days, participants will take part in detailed study and reading sessions from 7.30am to 9.00pm, including the processes of dhabt (verification of textual accuracy) and tashih (scholarly authentication and correction).The programme will culminate on the fifth day with the final tashih session and the awarding of ijazah sanad (certification of the chain of scholarly transmission) to participants who fulfil the programme’s requirements.

A total of 850 participants are expected to take part. Of this number, 350 participants have been specially invited from tahfiz institutions, religious colleges and government agencies throughout Sarawak, while another 500 participants have registered online from across Malaysia and abroad. More than 60 international participants have also registered online, including participants from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Australia, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Mauritius and the United Kingdom. The participation of scholars and students from various countries reflects Sarawak’s potential as an Islamic centre of learning capable of connecting the local community with the international network of traditional Islamic scholarship.

During the same press conference, LAKMNS Chief Executive Officer Datu Haji Abdul Hadi bin Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir said that LAKMNS remains open to collaborating with various parties in organising programmes that benefit the community.

The official opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on 1 September 2026 at 8.00am at Masjid Negeri Sarawak and will be officiated by Sahibus Samahah Dato’ Khalidi bin Ibrahim, Mufti of Sarawak.Meanwhile, the closing ceremony on 5 September 2026 will be officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, representing the Premier of Sarawak.

The closing ceremony will also feature the final tashih session and the awarding of ijazah sanad to participating scholars and students.
